Sadly, in Florentina\u2019s case - the second-oldest bear at the AMP Libearty Sanctuary - there have been far too few \u201csmiles\u201d and far too much suffering.

When she was still only a cub, her mother was brutally killed. Florentina was thrown into a tiny, filthy zoo cage. Her life was so unbearable that, after 18 years in captivity, every last glimmer of hope faded from her eyes. She stopped eating and continued to refuse food for weeks, losing so much weight that the zoo staff began to fear she would die.

In 2008, when Florentina had become so weak that she could no longer lift her head from her paws, the director of the zoo where she had been held captive agreed to move her to the AMP Libearty Sanctuary.

Amazingly, within just a few weeks, Florentina recovered. She began curiously exploring every corner of the forest, delighted in making new bear friends, and her life became joyful and vibrant once again.

Today, at the age of 35, although life in the sanctuary forest has helped her overcome her emotional trauma, Florentina is struggling with physical pain. The long years of captivity, the cold concrete floors beneath her paws and the hunger she endured for days at a time have taken a heavy toll on her health.
