Alisa spent the first seven years of her life in a circus, where she learnt the sound and sting of her trainer’s whip. When she was no longer needed, she was taken to a zoo in Ukraine. There, her ordeal continued.

Away from the spotlight, she was used as a “breeding machine”. Her cubs were quickly sold, and Alisa was forced to endure the same cycle year after year.

As a result of years of hardship and neglect, she began to lose her sight. No one cared enough to have her treated, and eventually, she went completely blind.

At almost 28 years old, she was given a second chance at a normal life. On 12 November 2020, both she and Timka, the father of her cubs, felt the earth beneath their paws for the first time in the forest of the AMP Libearty Sanctuary. Yet the scars of Alisa’s trauma remain visible to this day.
