Unfortunately, in Florentina’s case, the second oldest bear in AMP Libearty Sanctuary, “smiles” were only a few, while torment – too much.
When she was just a cub, her mom was killed with cruelty. She was thrown in a small and dirty cage in a zoo. Her life was so hard that, after 18 years of captivity, Florentina lost all the hope. That was the moment when she stopped eating. She lived like that for weeks until she lost so much weight that people at the zoo feared she will die.
In 2008, when Florentina was so weak that she couldn’t even stand, the zoo manager decided to send her to Libearty Sanctuary.
Amazing, in just a few weeks, she revived. She started to explore each corner of the forest, she enjoyed making new bear friends and her life became colorful once again.
Today, 35 years old, although the life in the Sanctury, in the forest, helped her forget the mental traumas, Florentina fights physical pain. The hard years of captivity, the cold concrete floors and the hunger she has endured for days marked her health.

The Sanctuary of Zărnești does not receive any funding from the Romanian state. We live from the help of visitors, who pay for entrance tickets and buy souvenirs, but also with the support of donors.
