Samy spent a year behind the steel bars of a cage at Ciucas Resort. He lived all by himself, without any company of another bear or animal. The only company he ever had, was the man who brought him goat-milk and fed him by bottle in his first months of life. It would have been better for him to be re-educated to go back to the forest. In April 2009 the Sanctuary staff heard the story of a crying bear cub living in captivity. As he was very tiny and weak, he was immediately confiscated and treated medically. After spending 3 years in the oak forest of the Sanctuary, Samy was still sucking his fingers from his front paws at the sight of people. He has lost this habit now almost entirely. However, there are times when he remembers the unhappy childhood and, for a few minutes, resumes his habit.
