28 years of rescue and a new beginning – October 18, 2025

The Million Friends Association (AMP) marked a day with double significance: we celebrated 20 years since the release of the first bears in the forest of the AMP Libearty Sanctuary in Zărnești and inaugurated the first sanctuary in Romania dedicated to stray dogs and cats – AMP Victory.

In its 28 years of activity, the Million Friends Association, founded by Cristina Lapis, has changed destinies and built a mission based on compassion, respect and responsibility towards all living beings. From the establishment, in 1997, of the first private shelter in Romania for abandoned dogs, to the creation of the largest sanctuary for brown bears in the world, AMP has demonstrated that a community united by values can transform suffering into hope and captivity into freedom.

The event included the inauguration of AMP Victory and a guided tour of the new project, a unique initiative in Romania, dedicated to stray animals.

“This day is about gratitude and continuity. 28 years ago we set out with the dream of giving a voice to the voiceless. Today, that dream continues through every animal saved and every person who joins us,” says Cristina Lapis, President and Founder of the Million Friends Association.

The event was also attended by the ambassador of the Million Friends Association, British actor Peter Egan, known from films and series such as Downton Abbey, Ever Decreasing Circles, Death at a Funeral, Unforgotten and Chariots of Fire. This day reminds us of how far we have come and how much we can achieve when we work together for animal welfare.
