The works on the maternal enclosure are underway

The work on Terra and Pluto’s enclosure started a month after receiving the funding. The perimeter of the new enclosure was behind trees not far from the St. Seraphim chapel and the wolves enclosure. The perimeter was cleared of vegetation for a width of 8 meters with special equipment, to allow the access from both sides of the electric fence which forms the boundary of the new enclosure. The pillars were installed using a milling machine, and ditches were dug between the pillars, to facilitate the installation of the “underground” galvanized metal mesh which prevents any bear from trying to dig under the fence.

The surface area of the enclosure is approximately 2,500 square meters and is divided in two areas – each “section” having its own pool. Each pool will have fresh spring water, thanks to the unique collecting system and will also be provided with a draining and cleaning system from the outside, making their maintenance much easier. The pools have a water surface of 6 to 8 square meters and are 1.5 meters deep. Plenty of room for a good swim. The access inside the enclosure will be made by two separate gates, and the road to it, will be covered with gravel.
Terra and Pluto have waited patiently for their new enclosure: this week the pools will be ready, and in two weeks the mesh fence and electric wires will be installed. After St. Nicholas day, the bears will be able to test the new dens, lined with hay for the winter.
