The first course of Animal Protection and Welfare Education in Romania has started in Brasov, under the aegis of the Animal Welfare Commission of the European Parliament. Through a partnership with the School Inspectorate (IȘJ) Braşov, School No. 5 has become the pilot site for the course. Starting February 8, students in classes IV B, V A and VI C will attend a lesson about animals every Thursday until the end of the school year. The first lesson was received with great enthusiasm. ”We found out that one of the kids is taking care of a hedgehog he got from his teacher. Another one talked nonstop for five minutes about how to effectively clean a fish tank. Over 60% of these children have a pet at home, and 99% of them would like to volunteer at a dog shelter,” said project coordinator Liviu Cioineag.
AMP’s education team has been working on this project for almost two years. ”Our association has focused more on education in the past two years as an essential direction for a better future for animals. In partnership with the City Hall of Brasov and the School Inspectorate Braşov, in 2013 we started a series of educational classes in 14 schools in our municipality. The interest shown by students for animal welfare has led us to develop this course, meant to talk about contemporary animal issues—the stray dogs phenomenon, the garbage-can bears, the endangered species list , or poaching—in a way that’s understandable to children,” said Cristina Lapis, AMP president. ”Animals are coinhabitants of our planet, and as our lives depend on them, they too depend on us.”
To develop this program, AMP needs your support. Any individual or organization that makes a financial contribution to the project will be listed in the pages of the manual, and their logo (for organizations) will appear on www.ampbears.ro.
Our goal is for all Romanian students to learn to respect animals!
