Open class at the Brasov Zoo

After they studied about “The Protection and Welfare of Animals“ in the school programme organised by Millions of Friends Association (AMP), the pupils from two classes at the nr. 12 elementary school had an open class organized at the local Zoo by AMP. The children had the chance to see how the animals live in captivity, how much space they have comparing to their natural habitat, to what extent their needs are fulfilled at the zoo and how much the captivity affects their behavior.

Our purpose was to explain the relationship between animals and the environment and to build a proper attitude of the children towards the environment. The aim of the visit was also to show how the care of animals in zoos usually needs to be improved.

Two buses, rented by AMP, took the pupils from their school to the zoo. For two hours, the children had the chance to see the animals and ask questions about what they learnt during the first semester.

The deputy mayor Ciprian Bucur was present for this visit. Adrian Pânzaru, the director of the zoo accompanied the children during their visit and offered them information about the species and their characteristics. The visitors also found out that there are going to be more animals at the zoo, in the future and also a planetarium.

The pupils, supervised by two teachers, paid attention to every detail, asked questions and wrote down what they had to follow, what they liked/disliked. In the first class of the second semester they will talk about these things with the AMP staff.

The visit, which was supported by AMP, is part in the educational project initiated by AMP, in which we have the local representative of the Ministery of Education and the City Hall as partners. Its purpose is to educate and make children responsible about the animals and the environment. The pupils take advantage of a textbook, the first in Romania about concrete matters  on this subject, that was developed by the AMP team, after 18 years of experience in the animal protection field. We also thank the teachers and the Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Direction for advising us in building this textbook.

During the second semester, the children will visit a turkey farm and, eventually, they will have the chance to find out how the animals that couldn't return in the wild leave at the Zărnești “Libearty“ sanctuary.

AMP’s hope is to have more schools involved in this project, next year. The results will be submitted to the European Comission.
