Brașov is holding a green dog shelter

A year ago, AMP began a close colaboration with the city-hall of Brașov to solve the problem of stray dogs. An AMP employee is present every day in the public shelter at Stupini, where she monitors the reception and holding of the dogs and makes sure that the animals are being treated well. Although the law now allows the euthanasia of stray dogs, with the support of AMP the dogs from that shelter still have a chance to live after the last 14 days offered by the law. The dogs are not being killed; instead, if they have medical problems, they are being taken over by the Victory shelter and treated. For those who remain in the public-shelter pens, AMP has searched for families to adopt them, and as a result 70 of them found a HOME in 2013.
Thanks to the city’s collaboration with AMP, Brașov has become an example of how to manage stray dog populations for all of Romania. A map of public shelters all around the country shows the effects of this collaboration. (You can find the map here: http://mapofhope.wordpress.com/tag/rumanien.) Places marked with a skull are those in which incidences of abuse at shelters are high, and the dogs die mostly due to lack of food. This means they’re not even put to sleep with a lethal injection. Brasov is marked with green, which means that we stand among the examples of municipalities and towns in Romania that treat dogs the most humanely.
