The „Milioane de Prieteni” Animal Protection Association Brașov invites you Saturday, October 5th 2013, to the first edition of the national competition of acorn harvest “Ghinderiada 2013”. This event is being held in the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti and is dedicated to the „ International Day of animals”, celebrated each year on October 4th.
The competition runs for a single category: „ The acorn race” for juniors. Hazelnut harvest is also allowed in this race.
Teams can register either in advance by email at milioanedeprieteni@gmail.com address, or on the day of the contest, between 09.00 AM-10.30 AM. The competition runs in teams of pickers of minimum 3 – maximum 10 children, aged 7 to 14 years.

“In autumn, bears increase their appetite to raise enough body fat in order to cope winter hibernation. Primary sources of food during this period are acorns and hazelnuts, that bears eat with great pleasure. Usually nobody harvests these fruits, so that they remain unrecovered. Since the 75 sanctuary bears are also preparing their winter “storage room”, this contest is a great source to increase the natural food ration of these bears”,said Cristina Lapis, the president of AMP.

The competition is also a warning signal, pulled against irrational and disorganized berry collection, by the poor and forest districts, for direct sale on the roadside or export recovery. Berry pickers compete with bears, and they remain hungry and no wonder they havoc in orchards, hives of honey and even households.

In addition, it is a good lobby for spending time in nature and is dedicated to all ages.
