Preparing for winter

taiat lemne

Winter is knocking at the sanctuary door, threatening lots of snow, violent wind, and frost. As the bears prepare their dens, the sanctuary staff is getting ready to face the white “enemy.”
As colder weather approaches, 50 cubic meters of tree stumps have been brought to the main building of the sanctuary, where our staff has already begun to cut them for firewood. This wood will keep all of us warm during the winter. Our staff will have a warmer place to prepare the bears’ food, visitors will enjoy a warm building while they watching our documentary, and our furry friends in the training area will nap in toasty dens.
The November wind is snapping the dry branches from the old oaks at the sanctuary. Some of these are falling down on the electrical wires of the enclosure fences, which can keep the fences from working properly. These branches have to be manually removed from the fences each time a hard wind reminds us that the winter is coming.
The sanctuary road is also being prepared for the coming snow. To ease traffic during the winter, our staff has reconditioned the road by putting gravel from the roadside in the middle of it, forming a slightly peaked road so the remaining snow can easily melt.
