The sad story of Maya

Once upon a time there was a female brown bear named Maya, who was kept in captivity for a very long time near a restaurant called “Un baiat si o fata” (A boy and a girl) from Tohan Nou . She was so sad and upset that she ate her paws. She died in the arms of those who have brought her food. People with soul and great hearts swore that they will establish one day a big Sanctuary where to bring the injured and ill wild bears or the ones who have been locked in cages without their will.
This is how the Libearty project was born.
The “Freedom for the Bears” project has been developed by the “Millions of Friends” Association and it’s purpose is to save the captive brown bears and to develop a Brown Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti.
A study made by the “World Society for the Protection of Animals” shows that in Romania there are about 50 bears who need help. With the support of the National Environmental Guard 14 of these bears are now back in the forest that some of them don’t even remember. They will live the last few years of their lives here in the Sanctuary, far away from people, cages, concrete and bars. Some of them are already 30 years old, others 12 or 5. These bears are dependent on people. They can’t fend for themselves, therefore the food must be provided to them for the rest of their lives.
The Bear Sanctuary from Zarnesti will be the largest Sanctuary in Europe and it will become an attraction pole for tourists, scientists and all those who want to see the brown bear free, in his natural environment, playing or bathing in the pools without disturbing them and without them representing a danger to people’s safety.
Freedom for the Brown Bears, so that they can forget the suffering, humiliation and deprivation imposed by those who exploited them because of ignorance, stupidity, or simply indifference.
