A year full of achievements for the Libearty Bear Sanctuary
There are a few more days until the Libearty Bear Sanctuary – with all the 70 bears, will enter the new year. In this period, the snow that falls gently over the oaks invites you to reflect. 2012 was a year full of achievements for the Millions of Friends Association especially for the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti.
In 2012, the Sanctuary became the home of seven bears. Two of them, Jimmy and Jexie, were prizoners of a cage built by a hunter in the yard of a bread-factory in Arcus, Covasna County. It was one of the most difficult cases of bears kept in illegal conditions, and solving this case was one more step taken in the fight with the illegal bear owners. A great achivement of AMP is getting closer to the end of a long process, that begun seven years ago – the end of the illegaly kept bears fenomenon. The other five bears have been confiscated from former zoos, where they lived in conditions forbidden by the european standards.
Still in 2012, the Sanctuary has extended it’s surface with 9 more hectars, surface designed for the accomodation of the bears. Building the 3rd Enclosure took 7 months of hard work and 242.000 of euros WSPA has invested here. The new enclosure symbolizes the end of the development process of the sanctuary, started back in 2006 by AMP in partnership with WSPA International and the City Hall of Zarnesti. But for the bears, the new enclosure becomes a home for 20 more tormented souls in zoos or private properties.
For the team, the year that is ending meant improving the working conditions. A new colleague joined the team , who will be responsible for the electrical fences. In addition, the animale care staff has received as a donation from the Hauser Bear Organization a small car for transporting the food. This gesture was a reliable help.
