Victoria and her 11 puppies arrive at Victory

In the northern part of Brasov, next to a block of apartments, a female dog gave birth to 11 puppies. Weakened by the maternal effort, the dog — gray as the block she considered her home — tried to take care of all her offspring in a way that only a dog knows. The puppies hadn’t even opened their eyes when the Constitutional Court approved the euthanasia law, bringing a wave of uncertainty about how they would live. Or, rather, how long they would live…

In early November, the mother and her puppies arrived safely at the shelter in Triaj. AMP president Cristina Lapis went to the apartment block to assess the situation. “When I got there and saw them, I was shocked. After 17 years of struggling to get stray dogs off the streets, here was a mother with 11 puppies. Hard to believe! Now, after so many comments about the euthanasia law, after our organization launched a campaign for free spaying and neutering, I don’t understand why nobody noticed these dogs, nobody saw the mother, who’s also injured. By law, these puppies should be euthanized after 14 days. I want to see who can do this!” said Cristina Lapis.

Another victory
Once she was at Victory, the dog was given a name, probably the first one in her life. She is now called Victoria, because she emerged victorious from her battle with a grim future. Now she has hopes for a better life and a real place to call home. In a block of apartments, even — just never near it.
