Libearty – the chance for a female bear that ran on the streets of Ploiești, before Christmas

A two year old female bear is the new inhabitant of the Libearty sanctuary in Zărnești. She came from the Bucov Zoo, where she had been taken after wandering, on Christmas Eve, on the streets of Ploiești.

The young bear had been seen, for the first time, on the 24th of December, in the railway station area by a man who alerted the authorities. The police repeatedly tried to catch her, but she ran into the streets of the town, under the stress of the policemen who chased her. After wandering for about two hours on the streets, the female bear was finally tranqulized and carried to the Bucov Zoo, where she had to live in a 50 square meters area.

As she was first seen in the railway station area, the authorities believe that the young female bear might have left the mountain area by climbing into a goods train and jumping off when the train arrived in Ploiești. But it is more likely that the animal came down to the town from the woods surrounding Ploiesti.

No matter where she might have come from, the Libearty sanctuary is her only chance to live a safe life, together with the others animals we shelter here. The authorities realised that the young bear could not be returned to the wild and would become a nuisance bear if left to roam near the streets of Ploiesti so the only solution was a small cage in a zoo until the Libearty sanctuary offered to provide a forest life for her.

Ass soon as she came to Libearty, the female bear was microchipped, vaccinated and checked by our vet. She will remain in the quarantine area for the next month, so that she can get used to the other rescued bears beyond the quarantine fence.
