The 2nd of February is called in Romania „The Day of the Bear“ as it is dedicated to the most powerful animal in the Carpathian area. They say that the bear comes out of hibernation on this day. If it can see its shadow, the bear gets scared and goes back to its den. People believe this means that the winter will last for six more weeks. If it is cloudy, the bear can not see its shadow and stays out, which means the spring is close.
In the past, people thought the weather changes as the bear acts. They believed that on the 2nd of February there is a “fight“ between the cold and the warm season, so it could forecast the weather. On the bears’s day, based on the weather, old people used to forecast the weather for the entire year, in order to establish the best periods for planting seeds in the spring.
