Bears are extremely powerful wild animals. They are beautiful, very intelligent, but they are not teddy bears. Not a day goes by when visitors to the Libearty AMP sanctuary don’t ask us what we can do in the event of an encounter with the king of the forest.
Here are some tips:
- Prevention is important, so we advise you to
– never go into the forest alone
– only travel marked routes
– make noise to announce your presence. You can carry a whistle or a bell attached to your backpack.
– you do not have food with a strong and inviting smell or improperly packaged. Bears have an extremely well-developed sense of smell and they love food!
– Keep the dogs on a leash, as close to you as possible. Otherwise the dog will sense the bear, follow its trail, and the situation can quickly escalate with serious consequences.
- If the preventive measures were not followed or did not work and you still meet the bear it is important to:
– keep calm
– you withdraw slightly facing the bear
– speak calmly but loudly as you withdraw
– if it does not leave, throw your backpack as far away from you as possible, but never in the direction of the bear. You will save time.
– don’t provoke him by throwing stones, sticks or shouting
– don’t climb the tree. Bears are excellent climbers
– do NOT under any circumstances pretend to be dead
– don’t run, because it’s useless. The bear runs faster than man both uphill and downhill!
We advise you to never feed bears on the side of the road, take pictures with them, get out of your car to pet them or take a better picture, or open your car window. Don’t put your life on the line for a second of social media fame!
